Wrap up warm and step back in time as the village of Dunster lights its Medieval streets with atmospheric candles. This magical event, which begins at dusk, is a unique chance to enjoy the village and its magnificent castle illuminated much more softly whilst enjoying the traditional entertainment.
DURING YOUR STAY
Day 1 – Around lunchtime we’ll enjoy a leisurely stop in Cheltenham. Stroll along the leaf-lined promenade and perhaps pop into a cosy café or one of its many independent restaurants for a little something to eat. After some free time, we continue to our hotel.
Day 2 – Enjoy some free time in Ilfracombe, this charming harbour town is steeped in maritime history and remains one of the key working fishing ports in North Devon. This afternoon, we’ll take you to Lynmouth, for the remainder of the day.
Day 3 – Following a leisurely morning, our driver will take you on a scenic drive through Exmoor National Park as we travel to Bideford, set on the banks of the sparkling River Torridge. Beautiful Bideford is the perfect spot to enjoy a couple of hours. Stroll along the lanes which are lined with quirky little shops and cosy cafés or head to the quay and admire the waterfront. Later this afternoon we will be picked up by a shuttle bus which will take us to the festive village of Dunster. Every year this remarkably preserved medieval village lights up its street with candles; the atmosphere is both traditional and exciting and the entertainment throughout the village includes carol singers, morris dancers, hand bell ringers, a large fairground organ and choirs in the parish church. (Please note: The driver is not included today, due to the nature of the excursion).
Day 4 – Today we have included admission into Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum in Exmoor. Built in 1823, this family estate has been in the Chichester family for over 500-years. Inside you’ll discover an Aladdin’s cave of marvellous treasures for all tastes, from model ships to shells, collected over several generations. The National Trust Carriage Museum can be found in the old stable block and houses one of the most significant collections of carriages in the country, with over forty Regency and Victorian carriages ranging from grand state coaches to humble governess carts.
Day 5 – Shortly after breakfast we take you to Gloucester for a little free time. Perhaps visit the award-winning National Waterways Museum (admission is approx. £5 per ticket) and ‘journey through Britain’ on a 200-year voyage learning about the inland waterways. After some free time, we continue our journey back to the East Midlands.
