Escape those Winter Blues and come away with us on this South Coast Explorer! Joined by friends, old and new, delve into Thomas Hardy’s ‘Wessex’ – famous for his novels and the nineteenth century rural life, on this interesting break we include admission into the National Trust’s Max Gate, Dorchester, Weymouth and Bournemouth.
DURING YOUR STAY
Day 1 – After departure we take you to Oxford for a chance to explore. Famously known as The City of Dreaming Spires, Oxford is renowned for being home to a prestigious University and over 800 years of fascinating history. After some free time, we continue our leisurely journey to our hotel.
Day 2 – Enjoy a relaxing morning in Weymouth, after breakfast perhaps take a refreshing walk along the seafront. This afternoon we visit Swanage for the remainder of the day. Perhaps visit Swanage Heritage Centre and Museum where you can find out more about this fascinating town before enjoying a stroll along Swanage Pier, an integral part of the character of Swanage, reflecting its Victorian splendour and rich heritage.
Day 3 – After breakfast we’ll visit Bournemouth for free time. Known as the ‘Coast with the Most’ Bournemouth’s seven miles of coastline is the perfect backdrop for a brisk walk. Afterwards, head into the heart of town where you can find an array of museums as well as restaurants, cafés and bars. Later, we’ll return to the hotel via Poole Quay – a large natural harbour. Here, you can enjoy the treasures of the Old Town where sea captains and pirates once stood in the Poole Museum!
Day 4 – Today we explore Thomas Hardy’s ‘Wessex’ – an imaginary region near the south and south-west of England that was used in Hardy’s most famous novels. We’ll enjoy free time in Dorchester, Hardy was born just three miles outside of Dorchester, but “Casterbridge” as he referred to it was centre for several of Hardy’s greatest works. We have also included admission into Max Gate, an atmospheric home designed by Thomas Hardy, now in the care of the National Trust, here he wrote some of his greatest novels and poetry including Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
Day 5 – After breakfast we begin our journey home with comfort stops along the way.
